Many an adventurer swears by this drive as one of the must do things in your life. The road takes over 4 of the 5 highest motor able passes in the world. The highest is near Leh, about an hour north-east (Khardung La).
(2) Manali-Kullu-Manikaran-Naggar-Manali (1/2 days Difficulty: Easy): A nice scenic drive through the apple orchards of the Kullu Valley, along the banks of the Beas River. It is a nice little excursion from Manali/Kullu, and covers the Gurudwara and temple at Manikaran along with the palace at Naggar. (3)Mandi-Barot-Palampur-Dharamshala-Bharmaur-Chamba-Khajjiar-Dalhousie (3/4 Days Difficulty: Easy): Leaving the Kullu valley and heading north-west, this a nice drive, running along a ridge of sorts, flanking the Shivaliks on one side, and the Himalayas on the other side. The NH 22 runs straight from Mandi to Dharamshala, and there is a slight detour on the way for Barot from Jhatingri. The village of Barot is situated along the banks of the Uhl river, in a heavily wooded valley. There is excellent trout fishing to be done at Barot.
