Mountain Trekking in Shimla

Shimla-Sarahan-Wangtoo-Rampur-Shimla (2 days; Difficulty: Easy): This drive is essentially through the valley 'behind' Shimla. It is along the old Hindustan-Tibet road a.k.a. NH 22. The road initially travels east by north east along the Shimla ridge before dropping down into the valley. Here it follows the mighty Sutlej River all the way till Rampur, climbing steadily all the way till Sarahan. There is a famous and beautifully crafted temple and place complex at Sarahan. From Sarahan, the road winds through a long but narrow gorge, with the Sutlej swiftly flowing by at the bottom of the gorge. Turn around at Wangtoo, a few kilometers in side Kinnaur district, where the landscape begins to change from one that is covered by deciduous trees to that of a high altitude desert.
(2) Shimla-Wangtoo-Rekong Peo-Puh-Khab (2/3 days Difficulty: Moderately Tough): Basically the above mentioned route, but accessing the remoter areas of Kinnaur, right up to the Indo-Tibetan frontier at the confluence of the Satluj and the Spiti rivers. The road beyond Puh is patchy in many places it is reduced to being a dirt track, but this road takes you right up the Sutlej gorge, to the southern edge of Pin Valley National Park. A 4X4 is recommended, but depending on the weather, a front wheel drive with good ground clearance can make it.
(3) Shimla-Puh-Khab-Chango-Nako-Yangthang-Tabo-Kaza-Ki-Gramphoo-Manali (3/4 days Difficulty: Extremely Challenging): Going beyond Khab is not for the faint of heart and is 4X4 terrain only. The road (if it can be called that; it's not a black top) is a precarious dirt track that follows the Sutlej up to its confluence with the Spiti River, before crossing a rickety bridge and following the Spit all the way till Kunzum La pass, the birth place of the Spiti river. The road is extremely precarious, and in numerous places, its 3 wheels on the road, while the fourth dangles in thin air, pointing straight down into the roaring waters of the Spiti River below. This track/road traverses 2 passes: Kunzum La (13,653 ft) & Rohtang Jot (13,754 ft), both of which can have extremely hazardous weather without a moments notice. Despite its dangers and hair rising twists and turns, this drive takes you through absolutely breath taking parts of Himachal, offering you untouched and lands where mother natures' sculptures are absolutely beautiful.
